Xela and Guatemalan Independence Day

After Edinburgh I only had about a week left in the states before I jetted back off to Guatemala. School started in early August so I jumped right back into teaching. The beginning of school is always a whirlwind and I didn't really get up to anything interesting until midway through September.

My friends and I decided to head to the city of Quetzaltenango for Guatemalan independence day weekend. That weekend they have a big party in the downtown square area and lots of concerts around the city.

We left right after school and got there around 8 or 9ish. I hadn't been feeling well some of my friends headed out on the town while I crashed in my dorm bed. The next morning we grabbed breakfast and drove up into the hills overlooking the city. We stopped at this park that had crazy concrete slides down the hills.

Later we joined the afternoon party and did some day drinking on top of one of the language school buildings, before heading over to the concerts after it got dark. (Before we left for the concert we went back to the dorm for a bit where I found a glitter Christmas tree and proceeded to glitter everyone) There was a free concert across town and so the one we paid to go to was pretty empty. Me and Vanessa ended up getting pretty drunk and dancing right in front of the stage.

The photo to the right is the crazy alley where all the party people congregate. It was a bit much for me. We took this picture from one of the language school windows where there were less people and more personal space.

Vanessa, me and Mike finally made it back to our dorm only to walk into a drunken fight between two of our friends. We stumbled across Manuel sitting sadly outside the room (apparently he was yelled at) and instead of getting involved we decided to get tacos. Later we came back and the issue had been resolved so all were happy.

The next day we went to the fair for a few hours. A few people were brave enough to risk their lives on the rusty, 80's fair equipment (I was not one of them). I did jump in on the bumper cars though and that was SOOO much fun even though the danger of severe whiplash was very real.

Sasha was playing so hard that she broke a plastic piece off of her bumper car.

After the fair, we came back to the central square and settled into a spot to watch the parades, eat street ceviche and drink. Later that night we went to more concerts, after which we watched fireworks.

This weekend also involved Vanessa doing some car surfing, Crazy Samantha going missing (she came back the next morning having slept in some random persons dorm and rolling in some mud at one point.)
